Join us for an inspiring and enriching afternoon at Hagaman Memorial Library, 227 Main Street, on Saturday, November 4 at 2:00 p.m. as we explore the history of New England's maritime knitting with historian and knitter Rebecca Bayreuther Donohue! It followed the fish, the flight paths of immigrants, the sea-lanes of war: the knitted clothing of New England reflects marittime cultures the world over. Rich with origin mythology and salty with sailors' yarns, garments like nippers, half-handers, and the infamous fisherman's sweater each hold a romantic yet real place in our coastal history.Explore knitting a WWI submariner's outfit with the Navy League! Imagine learning to knit with a pair of whalebone needles you carved yourself! Join Rebecca Bayreuther Donohue, historian and knitter, for an ode to wool and marvel once again at how the sea connects us all.For over twenty years, Rebecca Bayreuther Donohue built research and programming at a major maritime museum. Now she practices and teaches living history in a variety of time periods and media, including the recreation of period clothing, material culture, lifestyles, and events. Last year’s favorite Christmas present from her husband was a custom mask chain bearing the legend CAN YOU DOCUMENT IT. A lifelong resident of the southeastern Connecticut shoreline, Rebecca is happiest with a set of knitting needles, a pair of oars, or a primary source in her hands. This program is free and open to everyone and is sponsored by the East Haven Historical Society.
